The mid 1980s were a significant time for skateboarding — most of us know this. Vert was booming, streets were evolving and clothes were quite loud. Skateboarders’ outlaw image was intact, but paralleling MJ’s aerial attacks, breed of high flying superstars were launching from half-pipes like Tony Hawk and Bob Burnquist .
Skateboarding take its toll on a shoe, but it punishes the one who wears 'em. The supportive ankle height and Nike Air cushioning of the AJ 1, the very things applied to help AJ's hit terra firma with immunity, were perfect for vert’s needs. The premium leather was better than the baked rubber, canvas and suede of other models as it's more durable, and the AJ1 soon became a skateboarder's favorite.
Now, to coincide with the release of the AJ IX “Barons”, the Air Jordan 1 High is another silhouette inspired by MJ’s stint with the Birmingham Barons way back in 1994. This shoe boasts an AJ 1 build with a leather upper, nylon tongue, “Nike Air” tongue branding, accentuated by a grey contrast along the rear and outsole while traditional black color scheming works around its toe box, upper, tongue and Swoosh branding.
The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG "Barons" releases in stores and online this week. TBA.
