You just got your much-awaited 13th month pay. You’re happy and very much eager to spend it on some things you’ve been longing to do—or buy—a couple of months earlier.

But hold your horses! As with any other things in this world, money will also disappear and will simply go to waste if you don’t spend it wisely. Temptations abound during the holidays so it’s best to think of ways on how to use your precious 13th month pay efficiently and wisely. You don’t want to end up with an empty wallet right after receiving your bonus, don’t you?

The Philippine Association of Legitimate Service Contractors (PALSCON), the country’s biggest group of service contractors that have provided decent and quality work to many Filipinos, said many fall to their impulses, especially those who will get their 13th month pay the first time. “It’s all about a bit of planning, knowing priorities when it comes to spending. I’ve seen many of our employees who go excited of becoming a ‘one-day millionaire’ once they lay their hands on their money, then feel sad once all of it are gone and they’ll ask themselves ‘what happened there?’” explains Rhoda Caliwara, President of PALSCON.

So it’s really best to sit down and think of what to do first with your bonus while it’s not yet with you, says Caliwara. That way, you’ll have a clear mind of what to do and how to do it when it comes to spending your hard-earned money. In short, plan.

The first thing to do is save, using part of the bounty as part of a savings fund that can hopefully earn enough via time deposits or special investment funds. These funds can help through times when spending on things such as tuition fee payments for the kids or even for a possible business venture.

You can also minimize your debt profile by paying them off, Caliwara said, though not really paying all of it in one go. It’s best to pay it a bit so as not to accrue on interest. It works for those with credit cards who pare down their expenses and at the same time pay their interest on time.
Aside from a possible business venture for those who may have an entrepreneurial mindset, allocating part of the bonus for use in special investment instruments, real-estate or even a family or personal car can be options, but first check if going into these investment choices is feasible given your financial capabilities. Evaluate. Assess. Rethink.

You can even save some of your bonus to build up emergency funds for unforeseen circumstances such as medical emergencies, whether your own or a family member, house repairs after a storm or disaster, or even for fixing your car after a sudden breakdown. There can be lots of other things you can put your saved money to good use. As they say, you can never tell if and when an emergency happens so it’s best to be ready.

But most of all, don’t forget about yourself. You can save some as a personal treat after being hard at work for a year and spending countless hours toiling in labor. You can never be accused of being a spendthrift if you want to enjoy on some things and be pampered. Treat it as a reward so you won’t feel deprived, more of a “me” time when it comes to your hard-earned money. You definitely deserve it.

“At PALSCON, we encourage our members to teach their employees the basics of financial literacy. It’s hard to get a job these days and even harder to earn decent pay so teaching their employees about spending wisely, especially during the holidays, is a good way of showing we care for our employees’ welfare. They should learn to preserve their riches for anything that can happen in the future. It’s all about being prepared—and being wise,” explains Caliwara.

Heads up! This hasn’t been officially confirmed yet by either brand. A new Instagram post by H BEAUTY&YOUTH appears to show a forthcoming Brain Dead x Vans collaboration. This iconic Era looks to be the silhouette of choice for Kyle Ng and Ed Davis, who have given the pared-back canvas model a light pink makeover and covered its base with intricate tongue-in-cheek illustrations in black.

The graphics are continued on the vulc midsole as well. Final touches to the design include black lacing and tonal suede overlays along the forefoot and heel. Stay tuned at Skate Shoes PH for more information regarding pricing and release outlets.

The best thing about skateboarding is that there are no rules - no scoreboards, no refs or coaches telling you how you need to do it. Skateboarding is a totally individual sport. You can skate whenever you want (except at night), and however, you want. And yes, it’s a lot of fun, too. And getting started is easy. All you need to do is pick the right skateboarding gear.

There are two main types of boards: the longboards for cruising around and shorter boards for riding at skateparks and doing some cool tricks on ramps or the street.

But the big question is? Where to buy skateboards and parts in Manila / Philippines?

For me, the best place to buy a skateboard is your local skate shops (We Legendary, Caliz Skate Shop, Melrose, Skate Shoes PH to name a few). There will have a wide selection of skateboards and, most important, knowledgeable salespeople who can steer you in the right direction.

If you have no idea where to find them? You might want to start OLX, Lazada, or Galleon PH to give you an idea of the prices. If you're short on cash, you can buy second-hand skateboards, cheap skate shoes on sale, and parts on Facebook Groups like Skateboarding Philippines. On this kind of 2nd hand items that tend to wear and tear, I prefer to set a meet up with the seller to check on the physical condition and decide if I'll be buying the item.

Of course, there are Google and Facebook pages you might want to check out.

You can find deals and cheap skate shoes on sale at superstores (Center of Gravity, We Legendary, Stoked, etc.), but when it comes to skateboards, you get what you pay for.

With all of the tech advancements that Nike SB is championing on the likes of their latest batch of signatures, there’s still nothing quite like a classic. That’s why we're happy that the Nike SB Dunk Low is back in a Pro construction complete with an iconic color combination of Black/White/Gum for this Christmas season. We’ve seen this combination on the Nike SB Dunk numerous times, but the addition of a smooth black leather paired with synthetic suede panels is a nice change of pace.

White swoosh matches the midsole and tongue branding for a classic finish while a gum bottom hides additional Zoom Air for added comfort.

Grab your pair today from Premier! $90.

I’m a skater, and I love to skate. But the problem is, the rough roads and broken sidewalks of my town are the only places I have. In Paranaque, they’ve got all kinds of sports, with many people supporting them. The thing is, they don’t have any skateparks. Skating and biking youth needed a safe and appropriate place to practice their sport.  There are plenty of  basketball courts – why no skate park?  What we're begging for is a beautiful place for both kids and adults to enjoy for years to come.

More than five years after they've started work on the design, Sneaker Freaker can reveal that this Sneaker Freaker x Globe UNEMPLOYABLE book has finally been released in Europe and North America.

Founded by the Hill brothers way back in 1994, Globe is Australia’s most popular skate brand. The book chronicles the company’s DIY origins in the 70s, charting the ups and the downs, and celebrating the entrepreneurial pizzazz the brothers brought to the fledgling skate industry.

Written by Jason Boulter and with hundreds of interviews adding perspective and dozens of photographers supplying action imagery, it is a part business how-to, part skate history making it a unique book. And at 700+ pages and well over 5kgs, an epic one as well. Sneaker Freaker is quite proud of the work they did on this monster tome.

The standard edition is available in good book stores right now. What you see here is the super-deluxe version that they have made for a lucky few industry folk. The cover was hand-bound in vegetable-tanned leather and embellished with classy gold foil lettering. Dig a little deeper in the skatedeck-strength plywood box and you’ll find our interpretation of the Chet Thomas IV skate shoe. Assembled using the same premium vege-tan leather, Globe’s classic model from the 90s has never looked better.

Unfortunately, this is one of those infuriating money-can’t-buy promo items, but stay tuned and you might just have a chance to win this hefty box set!

Got these free NB shoes from Acer X NB for attending their Acer - New Balance Go Swift Event yesterday at KPUB (Trinoma)
In honor of my month-long shoe clutter series and my ridiculously frugal nature, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk about the many ways I have managed to get completely FREE SHOES for both me and my kids.

Yesterday, I shared my new mix ‘n match wardrobe and noted that many of my shoes were “purchased” for free. I got several shoes for free from advertisers and thanks to consignment opportunities and selling a couple items on eBay and Facebook Groups, I made about thousands of pesos to put towards my new shoes.

It’s actually crazy to think about how much free (or almost free) shoes I’ve accumulated over the years… and I’m so excited to do this BLOG blog post to share some of my ideas with you.

If you’ve ever hesitated to update your wardrobe because you felt it does not fit in your budget (yeah, I can relate), this post is definitely for you!

Ways to get free Shoes

1. Borrow and Lend

Yeah, I realize this is ridiculously obvious… but I had to mention this because borrowing is a great way to get free shoes that you also won’t have to store after you’ve used it.

After 2 babies I have only actually purchased 2-3 kids shoes with my own money. I’ve been graciously given a handful of shoes from a friend who was finished having children.

I’ve also freely lent out my shoes to friends and family members whenever they ask (provided I’m not using them at the time).

I have borrowed and lent SO many kids shoes over the past 6 years… it’s just crazy how much money I’ve saved. I’m sure some of my shoes have not been returned and I know I’ve mistakenly kept a few items that weren’t mine :) — but it all evens out in the end, and it all saves hundreds of pesos on rarely-worn baby shoes.

2. Consign

I realize that this isn’t for everyone… but if you (or your kids) have shoes that is still in good condition but just doesn’t fit or isn’t in style anymore, I would suggest bringing it to a consignment store to see what you can get.

Often times, consignment shops here in Manila will give you 10% to 15% more for your items if you opt for store credit versus cash back — and if you don’t have any qualms about buying used shoes, this could be a great opportunity for free (or almost free) shoes. Moreover, you have the added bonus of decluttering your closet in the process.

3. Shop thrift store sales.

We have a local thrift store nearby and a few times a year, they have shoe sale. Since most of their shoes are only 300 or 500 pesos, I can easily walk out of the store with 3-5 pairs of shoes for less than 2000 pesos!

If you have a quality local thrift store you enjoy shopping at, you should definitely check for when they have big shoe sales (and most stores do).

4. Promotions, Deals, & Freebies

Most of the ideas in this post are for used shoes — which I realize isn’t for everyone. However, I have gotten a fair amount of completely free BRAND NEW shoes for myself and my children simply by being smart with store promotions.

Take the new promo from Acer and New Balance for example:

WHEW… I think that’s everything!

Did you stick with me?

I know this was a longer post — but I also know that many of you might like to buy new shoes (or even start Christmas shopping for your kids) but feel like you can’t afford it right now. However, with a little creativity and your willingness to wear some used shoes you really can find so much stuff for free… or almost free.

Moreover, what I really love about most of the ideas above is that along with keeping hundreds of pesos in our pockets, they keep millions of pounds of shoes out of landfills!

Do you have any other tips for getting free (or almost free) shoes?

Keep your shoes fresh and clean with the shoe care products of Jason Markk. Jason Markk was founded over eight years ago in 2007. Seeing that there wasn’t a cleaning product designed specifically for sneakerheads,

Jason Markk filled that niche by introducing the Jason Markk Premium Shoe Cleaner. More recently, they launched the first dual-textured cleaning wipe for sneakers and shortly after that, a premium stain and water repellent. No longer would sneakerheads need to use household cleaning products and other solutions containing harsh chemicals to clean their precious kicks. Building the foundation of the brand with a grassroots approach, enthusiasts, collectors and publications quickly recognized it as the best product on the market.

The products of Jason Markk make dirt stains, heel drag and other street markings disappear, returning busted-looking sneakers to a state that’s more fresh-out-of-the-box. The company’s goal is to fulfill the needs and wants of today’s sneaker consumer by continuing to be innovative and creative. Its mission is to become the most widely recognized and trusted shoe product and accessory brand in the world.

Official and adidas Skateboarding have collaborated on a collection that will have you covered from head to toe. Le’s take a look at the star of the collection – this Adi Ease. Glaring burgundy livens the suede upper, while a color loved by skateboarders the world over (brown) accents the tongue and heel counter.

Official makes their presence known with cursive branding, and the vulc midsole is left blank – ready to be decorated with scrapes and scuffs.

The Official x adidas Skateboarding Adi Ease will be available on November 1 from select Three Stripe retailers.

The Nike SB ‘Shoebox’ gave us a hint of nostalgia recently and today it seems that we’re going all the way down memory lane with a series of boxes. Next up is the Nike SB Dunk High ‘Gray Box’. Nike has thrown back with a gray nubuck upper to match the color of the box, and green detailing, matching the old green label. Let’s hope this keeps going.

The Nike SB Dunk High ‘Gray Box’ doesn’t have a release date just yet, keep your eyes peeled.

Calle PH just launched their first ever skate wheels! Their skateboard wheels offer tons of fun and you will love how easy it is to slide and thane lines you leave behind. The graphic for these wheels is made by Felix Rosales. He took inspiration from Filipino culture, with words written in Tagalog and drawn sketches of a local videoke machine, a jeepney, and other imageries of a similar vibe.

Approved by Calle skaters Iking Diaz and Chocks Mangaspar, these wheels come in brand new urethane formulas. They offer higher tear resistance, more resilient, more drag, thane more, and are more controllable than generic wheels.

Calle Wheels are ultra fun, ultra slick, slide/freeride wheel. If you are looking for an extremely fun, playful wheel for sliding and freeriding the Calle PH wheels are for you.

Grab one now at their shop or through their Facebook page for online orders.
