You're probably here because you've heard of this magical solution called Sole Sauce. What is this Sole Sauce? The sole sauce is a DIY product developed by sneaker enthusiasts to help whiten yellow midsoles.

Does it Work?

Yes, absolutely. There is a reason why so many sneaker enthusiasts talk about Sole Sauce. It actually works. I always find it funny when individuals make videos about Sole Sauce and test it as if saying, "Hey guys, it works." Duh! We already knew that. The real question is, how do you use it.

How does it work?

Sole Sauce's main ingredient is the cream developer which has anti-oxidant properties that when applied, and given a UV source like the sun, will enable the product to remove the yellowing found on sneakers with white midsoles. There is a much more complicated reason behind this, but just understand this:

Sole Sauce + UV (like Sun) + Time = Removes Yellowing

Maybe, you may have seen hundreds of people claiming to have a "magical" sole-sauce solution that only they have and they created. Truth is all of these re-sellers use salon care creme developer. They just mix it with some stuff, re-brand it, and sell it for around 300 pesos for a small bottle :)

Honestly, I have tried various solutions, but based on my experience, mixing stuff with the cream developer will make it less effective than just using it straight out of the bottle.

To prove it to you, see this before and after pic of my Nike SB Nontourage. The midsoles have been whitened by Cream Developer.

Where to get the said developer cream?

You can buy online if you are lazy. But you can get the stuff at Hortaleza, salon, or even at a pharmacy. What I used on my Nontourage is the Hortaleza #12 Developer Cream. This costs me 35 pesos only for the 60ml bottle.

Note: Any brand works. Just look for "Developer Cream" or "Cream Developer" (the higher the number the better it works)

How to Use The Cream Developer To Rewhiten Midsoles

  1. Make sure you have available sunlight in the area you live in. Otherwise, you will need to use an indoor technique.
  2. Apply the developer on the yellow midsoles using a cotton ball. You can use your hands, but please wear gloves. You just need to make sure that you cover the whole surface of the yellow sole.
  3. Prop the shoe, and expose it to the sun for a few hours.
  4. Wash the sole of the shoe carefully, then let it dry.
  5. Repeat the process, until you're fully satisfied with the results.

Warning

Sounds easy so far? If this is your first time doing this, using this Cream Developer can be a bit challenging. Here are some things to be aware of.

Sole Separation

If temperatures are high enough, you will experience sole separation on your shoes. Usually, temperatures above 90 degrees will be enough to cause sole and midsole separation.

Material Degradation

Leaving the whole shoe exposed to the sun for hours will cause UV damage. This causes degradation - it starts to fade, yellow, and break apart. So please make sure to cover the other parts of your shoe.

Results

Quality and speed of results depend on how bad the yellowing was, to begin with. Lightly yellowed midsoles will lighten up in one session. Older, amber yellow midsoles will take a couple of sessions to un-yellow.

  • Learn how to ride it and work on your balance, at this point you should also learn the opposite stance, it will make things much easier to learn once you get into some of the more technical tricks.
  • Decide what moves you want to/need to learn and imagine how to make them work together, what makes them different and what makes them similar. It gives you a basic insight into the mechanics. So naturally, you should start with an ollie.
  • At this point, figure out the principles behind it. How does it work? Where and why are your feet supposed to do this and not that.
  • When you finally decide to give it a shot, don't think about what you need to do in a "step" fashion. Your both legs have to work as one, kinda like a solid sidekick - you have to be fully aware of both of your legs and your hips at the same time to create one singular motion. Otherwise, it will always "almost" work.
  • Once you can sort of do it, now it's the time to break it up into pieces and master every component. At some point, it will become almost like a form of "leg memory". Now look for a trick that is preferably a direct extension or variation of your previously learnt trick. After you learn how to ollie, you can either go for nollie, to balance your stances. If not, give kickflip a shot. Let's say you already know how to do a kickflip - try a heelflip or a shove it. Now that you know how to do a kickflip and a shove it - see what happens when you combine them both.
  • Great. Now you're addicted. Good luck and wear a helmet, seriously.

In one sentence - practice, be patient because it takes time, understand what you're doing and why you're doing what you're doing, also, I can't stress it enough - focus.

Got these free NB shoes from Acer X NB for attending their Acer - New Balance Go Swift Event yesterday at KPUB (Trinoma)
In honor of my month-long shoe clutter series and my ridiculously frugal nature, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk about the many ways I have managed to get completely FREE SHOES for both me and my kids.

Yesterday, I shared my new mix ‘n match wardrobe and noted that many of my shoes were “purchased” for free. I got several shoes for free from advertisers and thanks to consignment opportunities and selling a couple items on eBay and Facebook Groups, I made about thousands of pesos to put towards my new shoes.

It’s actually crazy to think about how much free (or almost free) shoes I’ve accumulated over the years… and I’m so excited to do this BLOG blog post to share some of my ideas with you.

If you’ve ever hesitated to update your wardrobe because you felt it does not fit in your budget (yeah, I can relate), this post is definitely for you!

Ways to get free Shoes

1. Borrow and Lend

Yeah, I realize this is ridiculously obvious… but I had to mention this because borrowing is a great way to get free shoes that you also won’t have to store after you’ve used it.

After 2 babies I have only actually purchased 2-3 kids shoes with my own money. I’ve been graciously given a handful of shoes from a friend who was finished having children.

I’ve also freely lent out my shoes to friends and family members whenever they ask (provided I’m not using them at the time).

I have borrowed and lent SO many kids shoes over the past 6 years… it’s just crazy how much money I’ve saved. I’m sure some of my shoes have not been returned and I know I’ve mistakenly kept a few items that weren’t mine :) — but it all evens out in the end, and it all saves hundreds of pesos on rarely-worn baby shoes.

2. Consign

I realize that this isn’t for everyone… but if you (or your kids) have shoes that is still in good condition but just doesn’t fit or isn’t in style anymore, I would suggest bringing it to a consignment store to see what you can get.

Often times, consignment shops here in Manila will give you 10% to 15% more for your items if you opt for store credit versus cash back — and if you don’t have any qualms about buying used shoes, this could be a great opportunity for free (or almost free) shoes. Moreover, you have the added bonus of decluttering your closet in the process.

3. Shop thrift store sales.

We have a local thrift store nearby and a few times a year, they have shoe sale. Since most of their shoes are only 300 or 500 pesos, I can easily walk out of the store with 3-5 pairs of shoes for less than 2000 pesos!

If you have a quality local thrift store you enjoy shopping at, you should definitely check for when they have big shoe sales (and most stores do).

4. Promotions, Deals, & Freebies

Most of the ideas in this post are for used shoes — which I realize isn’t for everyone. However, I have gotten a fair amount of completely free BRAND NEW shoes for myself and my children simply by being smart with store promotions.

Take the new promo from Acer and New Balance for example:

WHEW… I think that’s everything!

Did you stick with me?

I know this was a longer post — but I also know that many of you might like to buy new shoes (or even start Christmas shopping for your kids) but feel like you can’t afford it right now. However, with a little creativity and your willingness to wear some used shoes you really can find so much stuff for free… or almost free.

Moreover, what I really love about most of the ideas above is that along with keeping hundreds of pesos in our pockets, they keep millions of pounds of shoes out of landfills!

Do you have any other tips for getting free (or almost free) shoes?
