In 1988, Steve Caballero joined the Vans pro team, earning $800 a month.
In 1989, he signed a skate shoes deal with Vans. The Vans Caballero High Top (style 539), was also released this year.
In the 90s, Vert skating was certainly still around, but street skating was becoming more and more popular.
During this era, skaters wanted a lighter and less bulky skate shoes, so they were buying the Vans Caballero High Tops, and cutting off the top part, making a mid version of the high top. Skaters then would use, stickers and duct tape around the collar of the heel of shoe to keep the foam from flying out.
Steve found out about this trend and asked Vans if they can create a mid-top version of his skate shoes.
In 1992, the Vans Half-cab was released!
