After dropping teasers back in April, Virgil Abloh finally unveiled yet another Nike collaboration at another Paris Fashion Week, revealing a collab take on the Nike Dunk with famed graffiti artist Futura. Using two familiar color schemes of the “Syracuse” and the “UNC” as the base – Virgil adorns it with some familiar touches such as the bold print on the medial side and laces as well as the exposed mesh on the tongue. Futura added some touches also including the “FL” (Futura Laboratories) placed on the heels, his signature on the translucent outsoles and the insoles, and his landmark style of type used alongside Off-White Helvetica.

The Nike Dunk Low X Off-White X Futura also appears to be treated with some vintage flair; the Carolina pair has some yellowing around the shoe, while the Syracuse pair features blotches of orange on the blue panels – a usual detail on Futura’s artwork. See a detailed look at these shoes ahead and stay tuned for a release update.

BEHIND THE DESIGN - SB DUNK X STAPLE PANDA

Creative “accidents” often yield the best surprises, and sometimes, they even result in coveted sneakers. Earlier this year, when designer Jeff Staple was moving offices, he went on Instagram and posted an early sample of the “Black Pigeon” Nike SB Dunks. The shoe had “test” colors — black, white, and green — which he jokingly compared to a “Panda.” Like wildfire, sneakerheads around the world were begging for the shoe to become a reality.

“I was trying to organize and unpack, but I ended up reminiscing on Instagram, like a history lesson of the culture, because I have so many artifacts,” says Jeff Staple. “I just wrote a funny caption, that I asked for ‘a pigeon not a panda,’ and it blew up.” At first, Staple wasn’t convinced that they should do a “Panda” version. “We had just dropped a dope shoe in November,” he adds. “I was happy to wait another decade.”

Staple changed his mind once he remembered going on the global launch tour for the black “Pigeon” SB Dunk. At the time, he was excited to see the growing sneaker community in China and knew that he wanted to do another tour, in the future, that would start in his motherland—China, and end in his home—New York City. With the panda’s connection to China, and the pigeon’s connection to NYC, everything about a “Panda” SB Dunk seemed to click.

“That rejected sample was actually 80% there,” says Staple. “The ‘Panda’ SB Dunk is the first time that there’s a ‘Pigeon’ shoe without the pink pigeon on it; it has bamboo green instead. We made a collage of the OG newspaper clippings and put them inside a clear outsole. The exterior Swoosh is white, and the interior Swoosh is the OG pigeon gray.”

Additional details include a green insole with a bamboo graphic, and the interior’s “SAMPLE" stamp typically found in early versions is altered to read “STAPLE / NOT FOR RESELL.” All shoes come in the classic pink box. There will also be “Panda” Staple x Nike SB apparel, with various colors exclusive to certain cities.

“This was really the people's champ shoe, in my opinion,” says Staple. “If they didn't essentially ask for this shoe, it wouldn’t have happened. I love that this came from the voice of the people.”

SB DUNK LOW PRO

PANDA PIGEON RELEASE DATE
AVAILABLE 1/15 AT 10:00 AM EST

Years ago, most shoe releases were word-of-mouth. It was hard to stay up-to-date on what was dropping when as you had to know someone, or who knew someone, or be tuned in to message boards. It was hard to stay up-to-date on what was dropping when as you had to know someone, or who knew someone, or be tuned in to message boards. Way back in 2003, a cult-favorite skater collab was released known as the “Takashi” Dunks. This shoe features a stately black/gold color combo and was created in collaboration with pro skater Takashi Hosokawa.

Now 15 years later, Nike retroed the SB Dunk Low (sort of - the outsole is a bit different, heel tab color, swoosh color, not that fat tongue) and is now available at shoe retailers like Premier, and the appearance of official images indicates that they’ll be arriving on Nike.com soon as well. $90.

If you’re a real Nike SB head raise your hand!

Did you raise your hands? If so, your SB knowledge should be strong. With that said, you know Nike SB has brought back Dunks from the past with a twist.

Almost 30 years ago, Nike was asked to collaborate on a movie that would feature scenes set in the futuristic world of 2015. The brand was challenged to imagine sneakers that would suit the inhabitants of the advanced era. The innovation team, which regularly looks into a crystal ball of athlete insight and technology to project the future of sport, took that task further.
The resulting Nike Mag reinvented the conventional lacing system, integrating it into an inimitable design that became an enduring beacon of popular culture. As Nike, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker put it, “We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes.”
Today, Nike delivered a gift to Michael J. Fox introducing the innovation to the shoe’s first, and most celebrated, wearer.
This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s “power laces,” combining the archetype invention with digital technology. The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support. But this is just the first iteration.
Nike continues to test this technology across multiple sports, incorporating feedback into future game-changing footwear with unprecedented performance features that have the potential to impact athletes around the world.
“By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner,” added Parker.

The legit pair of Nike MAGs will cost you around $6,000 on eBay. Not everyone can afford to buy a pair or pay for those wild price point, and someone has taken this issue into his own hands. Meet Brad Fyfe, a member of the Replica Prop Forum who's dedicated to recreating memorabilia items from movies, TV shows, and more. Fyfe is a huge Back to the Future fan is buying Mag replicas and transforming them to look more like the real thing. His upgrades include a more accurate LED arrangement, a reshaped toe, and new paint for the midsoles. Most sneakerheads wouldn't go near a pair of Chinese knockoffs, and we're certainly not condoning it, but Fyfe's works is nonetheless an interesting take on how to obtain a shoe that's otherwise pretty expensive. Of course for those who won't spend thousands of dollars to get the legit MAGs on eBay and aren't into this whole prop customizing thing, do remember that the Nike MAG 2015 with power laces is coming back out this year.
